Bed Bugs

Protect your home or business from bed bugs by learning techniques for identification and control.

BED BUG FACTS & INFORMATION

Bed bugs have small, flat, oval-shaped bodies. They are wingless. Adults do have the vestiges of wings called wing pads, but they do not fully develop into functional wings.
Adults are brown in color, although their bodies redden after feeding. Full-grown bed bugs move relatively slowly and measure between 4 to 5 mm. Homeowners sometimes have the misconception that bed bugs are too small to see with the naked eye.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

The more you know about bed bugs, the better you can predict and control their behavior. Here are some quick facts to help you on your way.

Bed bugs can spread through travel, infested furniture or clothing, and by hitchhiking on people. They can also move from room to room within a building, and can spread quickly if left untreated.

Signs of a bed bug infestation may include bites on the skin, blood stains on sheets or mattresses, dark spots on walls or furniture (which are bed bug excrement), and the presence of live bed bugs or shed skins.

While bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, their bites can cause itching, swelling, and discomfort. In severe cases, repeated bites can lead to anemia or other health complications. Bed bug infestations can also cause emotional distress and social isolation.

To prevent bed bugs, inspect second-hand furniture and bedding before bringing it into your home, keep your living areas clean and clutter-free, and seal any cracks or gaps in walls, floors, or furniture. When traveling, inspect your luggage and clothing carefully, and wash all clothes in hot water and dry them on high heat before returning home.

The length of time it takes to get rid of bed bugs will depend on the severity of the infestation and the treatment method used. In some cases, it may take several weeks or months to completely eliminate the infestation.
